Job Description

Database Developer

Overview

Remote

5+ Years

We need a hard-core Database professional — someone whose career is primarily built around SQL/RDBMS engineering, not an application developer who also knows SQL. Core focus: schema design, stored procedures, and DB performance. Python is secondary/nice-to-have only.

Database platform: PostgreSQL preferred; strong MS SQL Server or Oracle experience is equally acceptable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design normalized, scalable database schemas from the ground up.
  • Write and maintain stored procedures, functions, and triggers.
  • Develop and optimize complex production SQL (joins, CTEs, window functions, views).
  • Tune query performance using execution plans and indexing strategies.
  • Own migrations and data integrity across releases.
  • Troubleshoot production DB issues.
  • Partner with app developers on efficient data models (support role, not building the app layer).
  • Participate in reviews with a database-quality lens.

Required Skills

  • 4 + years of experience where SQL/RDBMS engineering is the primary, career-defining skill.
  • Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, or Oracle (Postgres preferred).
  • Proven experience designing normalized, scalable database schemas from scratch (schema design, ER modeling, data modeling for scale).
  • Excellent SQL skills, including:
    • Complex joins
    • CTEs
    • Window functions
    • Views
    • Stored Procedures (writing, not just calling)
    • Functions (writing, not just calling)
    • Triggers (writing, not just calling)
    • Performance tuning
    • Indexing strategies
  • Experience writing and optimizing production-grade SQL queries.
  • Strong understanding of relational database design and normalization.
  • Experience with database migrations and maintaining data integrity across releases.
  • Experience debugging and resolving production database issues end-to-end.
  • Basic to moderate Python skills — secondary/nice-to-have only, not a core requirement.
  • Familiarity with building/consuming REST APIs — secondary, not a core requirement.
  • Familiarity with Git and collaborative development workflows.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills specific to data modeling and query optimization.
